Citrus microcarpa, commonly known as calamondin or orange calamondin, is a small, bushy, evergreen tree or shrub that probably originates from China or the PhilippinesIt is believed to be a cross between Citrus reticulata (mandarin) and Fortunella japonica (kumquat)The tree can grow up to 6-20 feet tall and produces a thin-skinned, juicy, golf-ball sized orange fruit (1 1/2" diameter) which is edible but the pulp and juice are very acidic (sour). The peel is sweet. Fragrant, white, 5-petaled flowers bloom primarily in spring, but basically may produce 4-5 smaller flushes throughout the year. Seeing flowers and ripe fruit on the plant at the same time is not unusual. Branches (sometimes with small number of short spines) are clad with oval, rich, slightly glossy, evergreen green leaves (to 2-4" long). Leaves are aromatic.

Here are some step-by-step instructions for caring for your Citrus microcarpa tree:

    1. Create the ideal environment: Calamondin trees thrive in warm, sunny climates. They require full sun exposure and well-drained soils with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0The tree is sensitive to cold temperatures and thrives in warm, moist climates.

    2. Plant the tree: Plant your calamondin tree in a location that receives at least 8 hours of sunlight daily year-round and that never drops below 41 to 44 °F (5 to 7 °C). If you live in a colder climate, grow your calamondin tree indoors during the colder months. Once temperatures begin dropping and frost starts appearing on the ground, bring your calamondin tree indoors to a sunroom, a patio, a greenhouse, or some other room that will still allow it to receive abundant sunlight.

    3. Fertilize and water the tree: Calamondin trees require regular watering and fertilization. Water your tree thoroughly once per week during the growing season (spring through fall), allowing soil to partially drain in between. Use a balanced fertilizer to help the tree produce more fruit.

    4. Harvest and prune: Once your calamondin tree is 3 to 4 years old, you should be able to harvest anywhere from 40 to 100 fruits every year! Pick fruits once they are firm and ripe. Prune your calamondin tree from time to time if you find it’s getting unruly or too large.
