Delonix regia, also known as the royal poinciana or flamboyant, is a tropical tree native to Madagascar that has been widely planted in tropical and semi-tropical areas around the world. It can reach a height of 30-40 feet and has a broad-spreading, flat-topped, umbrella-like crown. Mature tree crowns can often be 60-70 feet wide. The tree is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of orange-red flowers over summer. The flowers are large, with four spreading scarlet or orange-red petals up to 8 cm long, and a fifth upright petal called the standard, which is slightly larger and spotted with yellow and white. They appear in corymbs along and at the ends of branches. The naturally occurring variety flavida has yellow flowers. Delonix regia performs best in well-drained soil in a warm, bright setting that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Water your Delonix regia regularly, but make sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. During the early stages of this plant’s life, it is important to keep the soil consistently moist to encourage root development. Fertilize your Delonix regia every few weeks during the growing season with a bonsai fertilizer. They need high levels of phosphorous as it promotes the best blooms. They need some potassium to produce a strong and healthy plant. Prune your Delonix regia regularly to encourage new growth .
