Portulaca grandiflora (Hanging)
Portulaca grandiflora, also known as moss rose, is a succulent flowering plant in the purslane family Portulacaceae, native to southern Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay and often cultivated in gardens. It is an annual plant that grows up to 6-8 inches tall and spreads to 12 inches wide or more. The leaves are thick and fleshy, up to 2.5 cm long, arranged alternately or in small clusters. The flowers are rose-like and ruffled, with five petals that are 2.5-3 cm in diameter. They come in a variety of colors including red, orange, pink, white, and yellow. The upright shoots branch usually near the base and the spreading leaves are almost or completely stalk-shaped and taper towards the tip. Portulaca grandiflora is widely grown in temperate climates as an ornamental plant for annual bedding or as a container plant. It requires ample sunlight and well-drained soils. It requires almost no attention and spreads itself very easily. In places with old architecture it can grow between the stones of the road or sidewalk. Seeds are often sold as mixtures, such as Double Flowering Mixture (see illustrations).
Planting: Portulaca grandiflora prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Space the plants 10-20 cm apart and water well after planting.
Watering: After planting, water the plant only when the soil feels dry to the touch at the top. Use a watering can or garden hose to water the plants’ base, making sure not to wet the blooms.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in mid-summer if needed.
Pruning: Remove wilted blooms to discourage self-seeding and promote continued blooming throughout the season.
Pests and Diseases: Regularly check the plants for aphids.
